The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse

Tuesday Travels

Last week, I featured the  Cape Henry Lighthouse of Virginia, if you havent read about it you can check it out  Here.
Below is the original lighthouse that was build in 1792. This lighthouse is no longer operational. They stop using this old lighthouse when the new one was built in 1881. Its because this lighthouse is no longer conducive, it was damage by hurricanes a lot of times, and also in Civil War. It was repaired many times too, until they finally decided to build another one that is just located 350meter away from it.

This lighthouse has served its purpose, and its one of historical landmarks here in VA. Its open for public, so my son and I went up to see the top. My hubby didnt went up, because babies are not allowed, so he stayed behind to watch the little one.

Below are some of my photos inside the lighthouse.

PhotobucketThis tablet  says it all about the history of this lighthouse.

On the tablet stated : ‘Near this spot, Landed April 26, 1607, Capt. Gabriel Archer, Christopher Newport, Hon. George Percy.. calling the place “CAPE HENRY” April 29, 1607.

PhotobucketNote says : The Walls are thicker at the bottom than they are at the top.

PhotobucketDO NOT TOUCH! Thats the only visible part of the original wall.

PhotobucketThey used fish oil back then to light up the lamp. Lens was not yet invented when they built this lighthouse.

And here is my little boy in the lantern room of the lighthouse . Its pretty high up here and very toasty too! It was so warm that day, it felt like we were inside the oven here.

Cape Henry Lighthouse of VA.

When we had our summer vacation last year, the Cape Henry Lighthouse was one of our tourist destination. Actually its the last place that we visited, before we head home to PA. This lighthouse is located at the Fort Story, Cheasapeak Bay of Virginia. It was build on June 10, 1878 and was first used on December 15, 1881. Until now this lighthouse is still operational, so it’s off limits from the visitors. I was hoping that we could go inside and see how this thing works, but they dont want any visitors inside in order to preserve it.Photobucket

Actually this is not the original Cape Henry Lighthouse, its the replacement of the old one that was build in 1792 which is no longer operational, but still standing 350ft away from this one. It was damage by the Hurricane, and then the Civil War. They’ve been rebuilding it, but decided to make a new one in 1881. The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse is open for the public, so we had the chance to look inside of the remains and had the pretty view of the New Cape Henry Lighthouse. Below are some photos I took, when my son and I were ascending the steps to the Old Lighthouse. I will feature the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse next time, right now, lets enjoy the beauty of this Lighthouse from a far.
